Clinical Scores
APGAR Score Calculator
Newborn assessment at 1 and 5 minutes after birth.
Formula
Sum of five components (0–2 each): Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration
How it is used
- Scored at 1 and 5 minutes, and every 5 minutes after that while the score is below 7.
- Resuscitation is never delayed to calculate the score; the heart rate and breathing drive the neonatal algorithm.

- Postpartum and Newborn NormalsThe Apgar is assigned at 1 and 5 minutes; 7–10 at 5 minutes is normal, and lower scores are linked with more illness in populations (Merck). It is not used to guide resuscitation, which starts before the 1-minute score, although some of its parts (heart rate, breathing effort and tone) do guide it (Merck). Rescoring and resuscitation steps are on Newborn Care and Resuscitation.
